Squint surgery Frequently Asked Questions

To be a good candidate for squint surgery, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 18 and 100 years old.
  • Have a visible misalignment of the eyes which affects your life.
  • You may have had no previous squint surgery, or had multiple previous operations.
  • You may have been denied surgery through the NHS.
  • You may have been told that squint surgery is not an option elsewhere.

Squint surgery aims to realign the eyes so they look normal.

During the surgery, the eye muscles are either tightened or relaxed to change the pull on the eyeballs. This changes the alignment of the eyes. At no point is your eye taken out. It’s all done through micro-incision surgery.

Advantages:

  • High Success Rate: Overall 95% of our patients achieve success from a single operation.
  • Quick Procedure: Surgery is usually completed in less than an hour.
  • Anaesthesia Options: General anaesthetic is the norm, but you can also have surgery under local anaesthesia as well.
  • Short Wait Time: Surgery can be done within 3 weeks from the first consultation.
  • Day Case Surgery: No overnight stay required.
  • Immediate Benefits: Many patients notice improvement from day 1, but it does take a few weeks for the eyes to settle down.
  • Minimal Pain: Most patients experience very little discomfort afterward. A couple of days of paracetamol is all most patients need.
  • Rapid rehabilitation: You can return to normal daily activities after a day, you can exercise after two days, you can return to work after 1-2 weeks.

Disadvantages:

  • Low Risk of Complications: Like all surgery, the risk of complications is not zero. The risk of vision loss in an eye is about 1 in 4000.
  • Not perfection: We aim for a significant improvement in eye alignment but can’t achieve 100% perfection. Still, what we normally achieve is life-changing.
  • Healing time: It takes about 8 weeks for the eyes to feel fully back to normal.
  • Irritation: The stitches we use take 6-7 weeks to dissolve and the eyes can feel scratchy during that period, but it improves week by week. Some patients may experience mild pain, swelling, or discomfort.
  • Potential Need for Further Adjustments: Not all patients achieve perfect results and may need additional procedures. Your risk of this will be explained at your appointment. For all patients combined it is around 5%.

Squint surgery is very safe, even safer than cataract surgery.

However, like any surgery, there are some risks. These include:

  • Overcorrection or undercorrection, where the problem might not be fully fixed.
  • The need for another surgery, in about 5% of cases.
  • New or ongoing double vision, in about 2% of patients.
  • Loss of vision, which is very rare, about 1 in 4,000 people.
  • Redness or scarring on the white part of the eye.
  • A slight change in the shape of the eyelid.

Overall, the risks are low, and most patients see great results.

Besides surgery, or leaving things alone, the other option is Botox injections.

Botox injections can make the eyes straighter for a period of a few months. However, Botox requires repeated treatments every few months and can worsen vision initially,

Surgery offers a more stable and permanent solution.

  1. Book an initial consultation to see if surgery is right for you and discuss your options.
  2. Get pre-surgery measurements, either local to you or in London. Sometimes, these can be taken on the day of surgery.
  3. Undergo the surgery as a day case, meaning you don’t stay overnight.
  4. Put in your post-op drops for 6-7 weeks.
  5. Attend two follow-up appointments, one in 2 weeks and another in 2 months, to check your progress and healing.
  6. Enjoy the results of your surgery!

Successful squint surgery:

  • increases your self-esteem
  • increases your confidence

It makes you more confident:

  • making eye contact
  • meeting new people
  • in your relationships
  • in your career
  • in making presentations
