Direct Access to Your Surgeon After Squint Surgery
Why Choose Private Squint Surgery?
In the UK, squint surgery may be performed through the NHS, through insurance or as self-pay. NHS treatment is free, but waiting times can be long.
Self-pay allows you to choose your surgeon directly and prioritise experience, specialisation and access.

Can You Contact Your Surgeon Directly After Squint Surgery?
Direct surgeon access after squint surgery means you can contact the consultant who operated on you with questions during recovery, instead of going through a general helpline. The operating surgeon can put redness, a gritty feeling or shifting double vision in the context of your own operation. It does not replace 999, A&E, NHS 111 or your follow-up appointments.
London Squint Clinic focuses exclusively on adult squint and double vision surgery, led by Mr Nadeem Ali, a former Moorfields Eye Hospital consultant. Surgeon-led postoperative care comes from Mr Ali, and the Signature Care package adds direct 24/7 WhatsApp access during recovery.
What Is Direct Surgeon Access After Squint Surgery?
Direct surgeon access is a post-operative care model in which you can contact the consultant who performed your operation with questions during recovery. You do not go through a general helpline, nurse triage or an on-call doctor who is unfamiliar with your case. The person answering already knows what was done and why.
This matters in squint surgery aftercare. Early recovery from eye-muscle surgery often brings redness, a gritty feeling and double vision that may shift as the eye settles. Each of these can prompt a simple question: is this expected for me?
At London Squint Clinic, every surgical patient receives surgery and surgeon-led postoperative care from Mr Ali. The Signature Care package adds direct 24/7 WhatsApp communication with Mr Ali during recovery. For details of how that channel works, see our guide to 24/7 WhatsApp support during recovery.
Why Does Speaking to Your Own Surgeon Bring Peace of Mind?
Much post-operative worry comes from uncertainty rather than from a real problem. A patient notices a red patch on the white of the eye, or finds that double vision looks different from yesterday. Without context, it is hard to know whether this is part of normal healing.
The operating surgeon holds that context. They know which muscles were adjusted, by how much, and whether adjustable sutures were used. They also know your history, which matters most in complex cases. Examples include revision squint surgery after a previous operation, or diplopia linked to a cranial nerve palsy or thyroid eye disease.
This is the core of continuity of care. The General Medical Council’s Good Medical Practice guidance includes standards on continuity and coordination of care, because information can be lost when responsibility passes between clinicians. When the same consultant plans, performs and follows up your surgery, fewer handovers are needed. The advice you receive is also more likely to stay consistent.
None of this lessens the value of nurses, on-call doctors or NHS services. They are the right route in many situations, and some situations call for them specifically. Different routes suit different questions.
How Do Post-Operative Contact Routes Compare?
The table below compares common ways patients seek help after surgery. It describes how each route typically works, not how quickly anyone responds.
| Contact route | Who answers | Familiarity with your operation | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating surgeon (direct access, e.g. Signature Care WhatsApp) | The consultant who performed your surgery | First-hand knowledge of the surgical plan and your history | Non-emergency questions about whether a symptom fits your expected recovery |
| Clinic team or scheduled surgeon-led follow-up | Clinic staff, with review by the surgeon at follow-up | Access to your records and the surgeon’s plan | Planned checks, practical questions and arranging appointments |
| Out-of-hours or on-call doctor | A doctor covering the service at that time | Usually relies on notes rather than personal knowledge of the operation | Concerns that need a clinician’s view outside normal hours |
| NHS 111 | Trained advisers and clinicians using structured assessment | General; no detailed knowledge of your specific surgery | Urgent but non-life-threatening problems when you are unsure where to go |
| 999 or A&E | Emergency services and hospital emergency teams | General; they will assess you from first principles | Sudden vision loss, severe pain or signs of serious illness |
Why Does Context Matter in Squint and Double Vision Recovery?
Eye alignment and double vision can change while the tissues heal and the brain adapts to the new position of the eyes. A change that is expected after one operation may be worth checking after another. Interpreting it depends on knowing the surgical plan, including which way the eye was moved.
For general background on the condition, the NHS provides an overview of squint (strabismus). Your own surgeon can then apply that general knowledge to your specific eyes.
How Should You Use Direct Surgeon Access During Recovery?
Direct access works best when your messages are specific. A well-prepared message helps your surgeon judge quickly whether a symptom is expected, needs a change in drops, or calls for an in-person review.
Issues worth raising during surgical recovery include:
- New pain, or pain that is getting worse rather than settling
- Changes in vision, or a noticeable change in the pattern of double vision
- Sticky or coloured discharge, or increasing swelling of the eyelids
- Uncertainty about eye drops: which ones, how often, or a missed dose
- Everyday questions, such as returning to screens, washing your hair or exercising
When you send a message, include the following:
- Which eye is affected, or whether both are.
- When the symptom started and whether it is changing.
- A clear photo in good natural light, if the concern is visible. Take one with the eye looking straight ahead.
- The drops and medicines you are currently using.
Keep your written post-operative instructions to hand. Many questions are answered there, and your surgeon may refer you back to them. A common mistake is describing double vision vaguely. Saying whether images are side by side, one above the other, or tilted gives far more useful information.
WhatsApp access to Mr Ali applies to Signature Care patients only. Complete Care patients also receive surgeon-led postoperative care from Mr Ali, through the follow-up and contact arrangements the clinic sets out at the time of surgery.
When Should You Call 999 or Go to A&E Instead?
Some symptoms need urgent emergency care, whatever aftercare route you have. These include sudden loss of vision, severe or rapidly escalating pain, and signs of serious illness such as feeling very unwell or confused. In these situations, call 999 or go straight to A&E rather than waiting for a reply to a message.
The NHS explains when to go to A&E and when NHS 111 is more appropriate. Contact with your surgeon complements these services. It does not replace them, and you can let your surgeon know afterwards.
Who Provides Your Aftercare at London Squint Clinic?
Your aftercare at London Squint Clinic is provided by Mr Nadeem Ali, the consultant who performs your operation. He has 24 years of eye surgery experience. He was a Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital for 13 years, from 2010 to 2023. From 2016 to 2023 he was Lead for Adult Squint and Double Vision and Neuro-Ophthalmology at Moorfields South.
He trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge and holds the MA, MB BChir, MRCOphth and FRCSEd(Ophth) qualifications.
His practice is entirely focused on adult squint and double vision surgery. This includes:
- Revision surgery after previous squint operations
- Complex squints, including Duane syndrome and Brown syndrome
- Adjustable suture surgery
- Diplopia from 3rd, 4th or 6th nerve palsies, thyroid eye disease or head injury
That narrow focus matters after surgery. A symptom that looks unusual to a generalist may be a familiar pattern to someone who treats these conditions every working day. Mr Ali is also a Visiting Consultant in Squint Surgery for the Gibraltar Health Authority and the Iceland Government Health Service. For a broader view of eye care in the UK, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists maintains a patient information hub.
Does the Same Consultant Provide Care From Start to Finish?
At London Squint Clinic, the consultant-led model runs from first contact to recovery. You can book a consultation by video or in person, and no referral is needed. Mr Ali then performs the surgery and provides the postoperative care himself.
The person assessing your recovery is the person who examined you, planned the operation and carried it out. You can read more about Mr Nadeem Ali, consultant squint and double vision surgeon, where patient reviews are also published.
What Can Direct Access Do, and What Can It Not Do?
Direct access to your surgeon can answer questions between appointments and help decide whether you need to be seen in person. For many patients, the main benefit is not having to sit with an unanswered question overnight.
It has limits. It does not alter the risks of surgery or determine how your eyes heal. Squint surgery aims to improve alignment and reduce double vision, but eyes can change over time, and follow-up examinations remain part of care.
Some messages will lead to an in-person review. That is not a sign that something has gone wrong. Certain assessments, such as measuring alignment with prisms or examining the surface of the eye, cannot be done from a photo. A surgeon who asks to see you is applying good clinical judgement.
Remote contact can be particularly reassuring for patients who travel for surgery. People returning to other parts of the UK, or to places such as Gibraltar or Iceland, may otherwise depend on local services unfamiliar with their operation. Being able to reach the surgeon who knows the case helps bridge that distance. It also helps the surgeon decide whether local care is the right next step.
| Can help with | Not a substitute for |
|---|---|
| Clarifying post-operative instructions and drop routines | Emergency services for sudden vision loss or severe pain |
| Judging whether a symptom fits your expected recovery | A full in-person eye examination and alignment measurements |
| Deciding whether, and how soon, an in-person review is needed | Scheduled follow-up appointments |
| Answering practical questions about daily activities | Any assurance about a specific surgical result |
| Reducing the worry of waiting with an unanswered question | Your GP or local services for unrelated health problems |
Which Package Includes WhatsApp Access to Mr Ali?
Signature Care includes direct 24/7 WhatsApp access to Mr Ali during recovery; Complete Care does not. Both fixed-price packages include surgery and surgeon-led postoperative care by Mr Ali.
How Do I Compare the Packages?
To see what each option includes, compare Complete Care and Signature Care packages. Consultations are available by video or in person, and you do not need a referral.
What Should You Ask Any Clinic About Aftercare?
Before booking squint or double vision surgery with any provider, ask:
- Who answers my questions after the operation: the surgeon, a nurse or an on-call team?
- How do I reach them, and is this available outside normal hours?
- Is that contact included in my package, or is it an extra?
- Who sees me at follow-up appointments?
The answers tell you more about aftercare than any brochure.
Direct access to your surgeon complements emergency care. It does not replace 999, A&E or NHS 111. At London Squint Clinic, every surgical patient receives surgeon-led postoperative care from Mr Ali, and Signature Care adds 24/7 WhatsApp access during recovery. You can read about adult squint surgery or book a consultation to discuss your options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every London Squint Clinic patient get 24/7 WhatsApp access to Mr Ali?
No. Every surgical patient receives surgery and surgeon-led postoperative care from Mr Ali, but round-the-clock WhatsApp contact is a feature of the Signature Care package only. The Complete Care package does not include it. The two fixed-price packages are set out on the costs page, so you can compare what each one covers before deciding.
Which symptoms after squint surgery are worth messaging the surgeon about?
Redness, a gritty sensation and double vision that shifts as the eye settles are commonly described in early recovery from eye-muscle surgery. These are the kind of changes where reassurance from the surgeon who knows your operation is useful. Sudden worsening pain, a marked drop in vision or signs of infection such as increasing discharge need prompt assessment. Follow the written aftercare instructions you are given, and use emergency services or an emergency eye department if you cannot reach your surgeon.
Why does it matter that the person replying knows my operation?
Squint surgery is tailored to each eye, so the same symptom can mean different things depending on which muscles were operated on and whether adjustable sutures were used. A surgeon who planned and performed your procedure needs no handover to interpret a message. An on-call doctor unfamiliar with your case would first need to reconstruct those details from your notes. That continuity is the main practical benefit of direct surgeon access.
Is direct contact with the surgeon a substitute for follow-up appointments?
No. Messaging helps with questions between visits, but it cannot replace an examination of eye alignment, movement and double vision. Mr Ali’s surgeon-led aftercare still relies on reviewing you in person or by video where appropriate. Think of direct messaging as a way to decide whether something can wait for your next review or needs earlier attention.
How does surgeon-led aftercare differ from the NHS follow-up model?
NHS follow-up is typically delivered through scheduled clinic reviews, and the clinician you see may not be the surgeon who operated. Self-pay care at London Squint Clinic is built around one consultant from consultation to recovery. Mr Ali spent 13 years as a Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital (2010 to 2023), and now focuses entirely on adult squint and double vision. The difference is continuity of the same expert, not a change in clinical standards.
Can I get this level of access if I travel from abroad for surgery?
International patients are treated at the clinic, and the Signature Care package includes direct WhatsApp access to Mr Ali during recovery, which suits patients who return home afterwards. Messaging does not remove the need for local medical help in an emergency, so it is sensible to know where your nearest eye casualty is before you travel. Discuss your travel and recovery plans at consultation, which can be done by video.
