It’s a sad reality that other children can be very cruel.

One of the worst things a parent has to face is seeing their child being teased or bullied about their squint.

Getting the right treatment, at the right time, is crucial to avoiding this harmful situation.

We help you to protect your child from bullying.

The best thing you as a parent can do for your child’s squint is to find the best doctor.

You need

  • an expert in squint, not just a general ophthalmologist
  • someone who knows when to operate, but more importantly, when NOT to operate
  • someone who takes a holistic approach to your child’s well-being: eyes, vision, self-esteem, self-confidence.

It’s sad to learn that many children suffer harm, not just from their squint, but the way their squint is treated.

Yes, poor advice from eye professionals can actually make things worse.

Treating too early, doing the wrong operation, doing too many operations – all of these can cause lasting problems with a child’s eyes, vision and mental well-being.

We see many cases where adults regret the choices their parents were forced to make for them when they were a child on the basis of bad advice.

He understands that every child is different and each child has different needs at different ages. And that each boy or girl needs a tailored approach to bring out the best in their self-esteem and wellbeing.

How we can help

As a specialist squint surgery clinic, we only offer appointments for children needing squint surgery.

DO book an appointment if

  • your child is 3 or over
  • your child has a visible squint
  • you want squint surgery for your child

Surgery costs £9900.

FAQs

We only operate on children from the age of 3 upwards.

We don’t see children until their 3rd birthday.

Operating earlier often is worse for the child than operating later.

As a specialist clinic for squint (strabismus), we do not see general eye problems in children.

So we don’t do/see

  • general glasses testing
  • chalazions (styes)
  • conjunctivitis
  • allergic eye disease
  • ptosis (droopy eyelids)
  • retinal problems
  • genetic eye disease
  • atropine for myopia

Yes some children can be seen by video. To do this you should have records from your local hospital eye department which you can share. Or you can have tests arranged by us and then Mr Ali will see you with the results of these.

Mr Ali does squint surgery on ages 3 to 17 years old at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, which is adjacent to London Gatwick Airport.

The address is:

Povey Cross Rd, Hookwood, Horley RH6 0BB

Children can have surgery as young as 1 year of age.

But there are very good reasons to delay surgery until they are older.

At the London Squint Clinic, we advocate strongly that there are many advantages in waiting often until age 4-5 years.

This is because

  • you get more accurate measurements when children are older
  • children are less likely to need repeat surgery if they have their first operation older
  • there is usually no benefit to the child themselves in doing surgery younger
  • the claims of visual benefit from early surgery are over-hyped
  • the squint is still treated before it becomes an issue at school (which is usually age 6+)

We always put the well-being of the child first and so we often recommend waiting until the optimal time for surgery.

But every case is unique.

Squint surgery is not usually painful for children.

We use minimally invasive surgery in all cases.

We also give local anaesthetic at the end of surgery to prevent pain when the child wakes up.

Kids will often need Calpol and Nurofen for the first 2-3 days.

Some children keep their eyes closed for a few hours after surgery.

But most are running around happily the next day.

Most kids are running around the day after surgery.

They may need Calpol and Nurofen for 2-3 days after surgery.

They can do any activities they want the day after surgery, including playing outside.

We normally advise taking a full week off school just because the eyes are gritty and it’s hard to study.

The eyes stay red and gritty for a few weeks.

Swimming is the only thing that we say to avoid – for 4 weeks.

We charge £9900 for squint surgery in kids.

This is an all-inclusive package including

  • surgical fee
  • hospital fee
  • anaesthetist fee
  • post-op drops
  • two video post-op appointments
  • one in-person post-op appointment
  • 24/7 access to your squint surgeon by WhatsApp in the recovery period
